Chapman Lake is a 68 acre reservoir located in Chapman State Park, Warren County. Highlighting management of the lake is the Commission’s trout stocking program.
Area 2 Fisheries Management personnel tended trapnets at Chapman Lake April 27 – 29, 2004 as the first phase of assessing the resident fish community. The dominant species netted was white sucker with a total of 578 captured ranging from 6 to 17 inches. Also in abundance were golden shiners with 475 captured ranging from 4 to 9 inches. A fair number of brown bullheads were also netted. See Table 1 for the complete list of fish captured. Table 1. Length frequency of all fish captured April 27 - 29, 2004 in 6 trapnets set for 142.5 hours in Chapman Lake, Warren County.
The crew will also electrofish the lake to sample the largemouth bass population as the trap net is an ineffective sampling gear for black bass. Results of sampling will be used as a guide in modifying the fisheries management plan for the lake. As noted by anglers and Chapman State Park personnel, there is a lack of cover in the lake and habitat improvement may need to be part of the plan.
