The PFBC hosted a public trap netting demonstration for the public at Shawnee
Lake - Shawnee State Park in Bedford County on May 18, 2005. Over 150 persons were in attendance and
received a detailed explanation on trap netting from Areas Fisheries Manager Dave Miko. Fisheries
Technician John Frederick and Fisheries Biologist Aid Charlie Weems assisted Dave in pulling the nets,
and also giving a thorough description of fish caught and data collected. Click here to view details of a March 2005 survey of Shawnee Lake.
The purpose of the trap netting survey was to look at the lakes panfish population. This information will aid biologists in better managing the lake for anglers. Pennsylvania style trap nets were used at Shawnee Lake. This style net works by funneling the fish out from shore and into the main holding area of the trap. A net was set up on shore for the audience to view. The nets are pulled three to four times daily. Data collected on the fish include species, age, weight, and length. Fish caught at this demonstration and throughout the week included: gizzard shad, largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, walleye, northern pike, bullhead catfish, yellow perch and chain pickerel. |
